Cub Scout Leader Training

Cub Scouts, a young man's first steps into the world of Scouting! For many leaders this will be their first steps into the Scouting world as well. Don’t worry, the Boy Scouts of America have a simple, four step training program to help you provide a fun-filled, safe, and action-packed program for you and your scouts!

Your journey begins with Fast Start Orientation Training. This will acquaint you with basic information about your leadership job. Fast Start be done either online, with our interactive online program or with a video-based training program available from your pack or the Council ServiceCenter.

The next step on your journey is This is Scouting. This Is Scouting is an online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules. It picks up where Fast Start left off and introduces participants to the following areas of the Scouting program.

    * Mission, Vision, and Values
    * Programs for All Ages and Abilities
    * Scouting Is Fun!
    * Scouting in the Community
    * Protecting Our Youth
    * Scouting’s Legacy

This Is Scouting replaces New Leader Essentials, and can be found on the Online Learning Center on olc.scouting.org http://olc.scouting.org. It takes about an hour to complete, and it is also available on DVD (No. 36118). Participants must correctly answer questions at the end of each module, and upon successful completion, they will receive a certificate of completion. This is Scouting is only taken once during your tenure as a leader.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training is next. This is the nuts and bolts of the program. Trainers focus on teaching leaders and assistant leaders how fun and easy Cub Scouting can be. All sessions take less than 3 hours and are packed with all the ingredients needed to make your program a success. Whether you’re a new leader or a leader changing position within the Pack, you will benefit from training tailored to meet your specific positions needs!

To round out your basic training you should complete Youth Protection Training. This is required training and must be repeated every three years. It can be done online or at an instructor led training opportunity. For more information on Youth Protection Training click Youth Protection on the main training page.

Outdoor trainings have are available to help Cub Scout leaders succeed in an outdoor setting. Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) focuses on teaching the new Cub Scout Leader with minimal camping experiencing how to plan and carry out an entry-level outdoor experience for the pack. Outdoor Webelos Leader Training (OWL) provides Webelos leaders with skills instruction and practice to enable safe and enjoyable outdoor activities with their dens.
Woggle, neckerchief and beads are presented to successful participants in Wood Badge. The award was devised by Baden-Powell for members of the first Wood Badge course and has remained the same since.
