Philmont Scout Ranch . . . Scouting's High Adventure

"I wanna go back to Philmont!" Once you've been there, you'll say that the rest of your life. Just imagine . . .

Trekking . . .in the Rockies. . . across the back country . . . in high mountain meadows bustling with wildflowers . . . by sparkling silver streams wandering through cool green glens . . . on red stone ridges cutting cobalt blue skies!

Philmont . . .Scouting's paradise . . . 215 square miles of rugged wilderness in New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains.

Each year, tens of thousands of Scouts from all over the nation discover the experience is an opportunity of a lifetime. Many will say years later
. . . Philmont changed my life!

The High Adventure Programs
There is much to Philmont. But when most people hear the name, one thing comes to mind: backpacking. The backpacking treks are a part of Philmont's High Adventure Programs, and Philmont offers a wide variety of them. Each program brings with it a different set of challenges and requirements.

The 2010 programs include: Expeditions- popularly know as Treks, Cavalcades, Ranch Hands, Rayado Trek, ROCS-Roving Outdoor Conservation School, and Order of the Arrow Trail Crew.

The High Adventure Programs are set in Philmont's back country
. . .137,493 acres
of challenging adventure in the mountains and mesas of northeastern New Mexico. The terrain ranges in elevation from 6,600 feet in Tent City at Philmont Headquarters to 12,441 feet at the summit of Baldy Mountain, New Mexico's second highest peak. Wildlife is abundant in the back country. Deer, bear, elk, bobcat, antelope, and mountain lions are often seen, as well as the ranch's cattle and buffalo herds. Also located in the backcountry are Philmont's staffed program area camps, as well as campsites waiting to be used for overnight stays.

Tucked within the canõns and arroyos of the always changing landscape is the ever present history of the old west . . . a speck of silver from the creek at Cypress Mines . . . a kerosene lamp from Baldy Town . . . a rusted horse shoe found at the side of an old pack trail.

No two days are alike - no two treks are ever the same - yet the memories of those who have gone are always the same . . . "I want to go back!"

Philmont Ranger Chant-
Traditionally chanted at the HQ dining hall bell just before meals as crews, rangers, and staff await to enter the dining hall.

I wanna go back to Philmont,
Where the old Rayado flows,
Where the rain come a seepin'
In the tent where you're a sleepin'
And the waters say hello.

I want to wake up in the morning
With my socks all wringing wet,
For it brings back fondest memories,
That a Ranger can't forget.

I want to hike once more the canyon floor,
From Scribblins to Old Camp,
With my pack sack a-creakin',
With my back with sweat a-reekin',
And my legs begin to cramp.

I want to hike again with such great men,
As made those famous treks,
From Beaubien to Porky
And from Cito to Car-Max.
